This weekend was the final round of the Gridiron NSW regular season – Round 11.  The UNSW Raiders played host to 4 matches for our final games at home.  It ended up being a scorchingly hot day at David Phillips and the football was exciting!

First up for the Raiders were our Women who kicked off _dsi2428-109against the NorthWestern Phoenix at 11.00am.  Our ladies started very slowly with the first half ending with Raiders trailing the Phoenix 14 – 0.  The second half saw the Phoenix pull ahead even further taking the score to 20 – 0 before #3 Liana Hogarth scored the Raiders first touchdown for the day.  A second touchdown to #3 Liana Hogarth was scored soon after however the ladies were still behind 20-16.  It was a NAIL BITING finish! With less than 20 seconds left in the game #43 Renae Hahn scored the teams 3rd touchdown for the day.   The ladies worked hard as a team to claw their way back into the game and take the win!  We would like to congratulate our Womens team on a fantastic season! The weekends result gives them back to back undefeated seasons and a first place going into the Opal Bowl on Saturday, 3rd December 2016.  FINAL SCORE: UNSW Raiders 22 def Northwestern Phoenix 20

_dsi2742-19Our next game for the day was our young Colts who kicked off against the West Sydney Pirates at 1.00pm.  The Pirates attacked early scoring 2 quick touchdowns but the colts responded and #10 Corey Craig intercepted a pass and scored a touchdown which put the half time score at 14-6 with the Pirates leading. The colts played well in very hot conditions however were not able to get back into the game.  Unfortunately, today’s loss end’s their 2016 season.   The majority of the team are new to the sport so we are very proud of how far the team has come in such a short period of time and we look forward to what they can achieve in 2017.  FINAL SCORE: West Sydney Pirates 26 def UNSW Raiders 6

Finally our Men kicked off against the West Sydney Pirates at 6.00pm.   This was a very important game as the winner would finish 2nd on the Gridiron NSW league ladder and take a rest for the first week
of the finals.

We were pleased to welcome some special guests to the game this weekend.  Wearing their new UNSW Raiders supporters jerseys the Windgap Foundation and Federal Member for Kingsford-Smith, Matt Thistlethwaite performed the coin toss for our final game of the season.

The match between the Pirates and the Raiders was always going to be one of the games of the season and it didn’t disappoint!  The Raiders started slowly making errors and giving up penalties. The score at half time was Pirates 28 – Raiders 20 with a 1st half touchdowns to : 41 yard touchdown pass by #3 Lucas Vojnar to #25 Rustum Todd , 12 yard Touchdown Run by #7 Lamar Dansby and a 3 yard touchdown run by #7 Lamar Dansby

Going into the half time break the men seemed down and out however the Raiders were not going to let this match go without a fight and they more than picked up their game in the 3rd and 4th quarters!  There were touchdowns a 15050142_10207614525908834_1447101724_nplenty together with a couple of smart onside kicks to help secure possession.  2nd half touchdowns were as follows – 70 yard Kick off Return for a Touchdown #20 Kingsley Dennison, 3 yard touchdown run by #7 Lamar Dansby, 31 yard Touchdown Pass by #3 Lucas Vojnar to #9 Damon Manns followed by a 36 yard Touchdown Pass by #3 Lucas Vojnar to #9 Damon Manns to finish.

This game was definitely the highlight of our season.  It was a heartstopping game in which our men fought to the very end – they fought back with all their might however they were unable to hold off the Pirates and went down in only their 2nd loss of the year and have finished the regular season with an 8-2 record!  We would like to congratulate our men on a fantastic season and look forward to seeing them next week in the Preliminary Final against the Northwestern Predators.  FINAL SCORE: West Sydney Pirates 50 def UNSW Raiders 46
